Sugar-Free Apple Compote Recipe

August 14, 2017 7 Comments

This post is also available in: English Français

I love having sugar-free apple compote for breakfast — it’s perfect as a topping for porridge, stirred into plain yogurt, or spread on toast. Depending on the apple variety you use, you’ll get different flavors: some are sweet and juicy, others slightly tangy and super crunchy. I always add a sprinkle of cinnamon — they’re a match made in heaven!

Prepare the Apples

Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks. Toss with a little lemon juice if desired.

Cook the Compote

Place the apples in a saucepan with the orange juice. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften (about 10–15 minutes).

Tip : use a mix of apple varieties for a balanced flavour.

Tips on How to Use Sugar-Free Apple Compote

Sugar-free apple compote is incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed in many ways. Here are some ideas to make the most of this healthy and delicious topping:

Breakfast Ideas

  • Spoon it over porridge, oatmeal, or muesli for a naturally sweet start to your day.

  • Stir it into plain yogurt for added flavor and texture.

Snacks and Treats

  • Spread it on toast, rice cakes, or pancakes as a sugar-free alternative to jam.

  • Use it as a filling for crepes, muffins, or healthy desserts.

Creative Uses

  • Mix into smoothies for natural sweetness and apple flavor.

  • Serve alongside cheese or nut butter for a balanced snack.

Health Benefits of Apples

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”  — and studies show it’s true. Apples are rich in antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. They’re also high in fiber, supporting healthy cholesterol levels and helping you feel full longer. On top of that, apples are low in calories, making them perfect for maintaining a healthy weight.

Enjoy all the goodness of this wonderful fruit, with NO SUGAR added. Paired with your favourite yoghurt or as a base for a delicious tart.
Ingredients
Ingredients for 150 gr :
  • 7 small apples you can use different varieties
  • The juice of 2 oranges
  • 1 tsp. of cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples into even pieces.

  2. Cook the apples: Place the apples in a large saucepan over low heat. Add the orange juice and cinnamon.

  3. Simmer: Let it cook gently for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are completely soft.

  4. Mash into compote: Use a fork to mash the apples into a thick puree. For a smoother texture, use a hand blender until no chunks remain.

  5. Serve and enjoy: Serve warm over porridge, yogurt, or toast — or let it cool and enjoy later. 🙂

Recipe Notes
  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for a richer flavor.

  • Adjust the cinnamon to taste.

  • Make a larger batch and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

  • Optional: Add a splash of lemon juice to preserve color and enhance flavour
